Obec Zemplínske Hámre. Zemplínske Hámre municipality is represented by a community situated in rural area of east Slovakia. With the population of 1271 people, it is the fourth largest municipality in the Snina district. The municipality is well known mainly for its location and tourist traffic potential. The village is an entrance gate to a protected landscape area of Vihorlat mountains, which as an official World Heritage Site (UNESCO) is visited frequently due to impressive natural volcanic monuments, fauna and flora. The municipality operates a recreational complex Barnova rika with a multifunction playground, heated swimming pools and sauna in summer months. The first settlements were founded in 19th century thanks to ore mining on the root of the Vihorlat Mountains. A couple of iron hammer mills, a charcoal blast furnace and metalworks were gradually built in this area. At the end of 19th century they belonged to the most important producers of iron ore in the Zemplín región (Slovakia). On behalf of this historical facts the municipality rebuilt and reconstructed in 2014 (with the support of Swiss Confederation) all the damaged technical monuments and established a local museum with an educational trail (Zemplínske Hámre educational trail), in order to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the region for future generations. Now the municipality is one of the fastest developing communities in rural region of Snina district, due to its location and quick connection to town of Snina. But the rural character of the corner region determines our communities to fight with the emigration of youngsters, who leave their home in order to find better conditions for education, employment, social living and only a small percentage of them are returning or considering a return back after few years spent in urban regions and cities, eventually abroad. The outflow of younger generations is observable in many aspects of todays life. The population is getting older and young people have no interest in working in the old traditional spheres (sheep breeding, beekeeping). Without any activities regulating the outflow of young people, the rural region is determined to be a place for the elders, with no further option to develop naturally by the work of its citizens.
